Horizon Studies Instructors:

Donna Brasset has taught a variety of classes on Cultural Anthropology at Sonoma State University, the Fromm Institute and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Dr. Brasset lectures widely on international relations, U.S. foreign policy, and the Middle East.

Charles Burack teaches interdisciplinary studies in Literature, Psychology and Religion at St. Mary’s College and UC Berkeley Extension. A widely published writer/poet, he is author of two books and dozens of articles, stories, and poems.

Bruce Elliott teaches courses in European History at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, and Stanford Continuing Studies. Dr. Elliott has a particular interest in the interplay of history and artistic expression in early modern Europe.

Mehrdad Fakour is an archeologist, scholar, art historian. He is a lecturer at San Francisco State and JFK University in Dream Studies and Philosophy & Religion. His prime area of research is the study of symbols in dreams and religious iconography.

Bill Garrett is a Professor of Philosophy and Religion at JFK University. He has for the past 30 years taught courses on the history of ideas, including courses in religion, culture, and literature.

James Preston has taught for over 30 years in the State University of New York as Professor of Anthropology and Chair of the Religious Studies Program. He has published numerous books and articles on topics in symbolic anthropology and religious studies.

Sheldon Rothblatt, Professor Emeritus in British and European history at UC Berkeley, teaches courses on Romanticism and the Enlightenment at the Fromm Institute.

Roberta Shaw has taught Art History at several major universities and now locally for UC Berkeley Extension, Fromm Institute in San Francisco, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at UC Berkeley and Sonoma State. In her courses she is especially interested in exploring how the visual arts relate to their historical and cultural context. She periodically leads art study trips to Russia and India.
